What happens when a bunch of gophers in the cartoon network studio take the worst known cartoon ever created and re-do the voices to make it weird and funny? Why you get one of the greatest cult classics of television of the 21st Century, Sealab 2021.

Sealab 2021, is the epic adventures of Sealab’s fearless leader Captain Murphy and his wild and crazy crew. These brave men and women encouter everything from dangerous sea creatures, cute multiplying gloop babies, menacing grief counselars and yes the worst of all…tourists! Every episode will make you ball up on the floor with laughter if you are into nothing but spontanious occurances and extremly stupid one liners. Unfortunatly the show was cut short after the fourth season ended mostly due to the sudden death of Harry Goz the voice of Murphy. Eventhough the crew tried valliantly to keep the show going with Goz’s son Michael doing the voice of the nutty Tornato Shanks, and of course more Hesh and Dolphin Boy time.

Still the show remains a favorite in the liniage of the now ever popular adult animation block. Each season is bizzare yet exciting ride that will leave you quoting things like Squishface and Alvis. This treasure is not to be over looked, enjoy the nutty sensation!

*Recomended Episodes:

Season 1: Stimutax

Season 2: Hail Squishface

Season 3: Red Dawn

Season 4: Joy of Grief

This is a great set particularly for the commentary tracks on the DVD as well as some of the bonus features. It’s great to hear the cast talking about certain episodes.

The show itself is great although the latter seasons without Captain Murphy obviously lack that Captain Murphyness, there’s still some good laughs.

I love this show, but if you’re not a fan of most Adult Swim humor, this might not be for you.

Pushing Daisies is an amazing show. It is unique and unlike anything else out there. It has the ability to inspire its fans and bring them together in mutual adoration of Bryan Fuller’s genius. But ABC did not give the show the treatment it deserved, and now the show is gone, canceled before its time, with no air date in sight for the final three episodes.

I look forward to when the Season 2 DVD set is released, as it will afford the true fans of the show a chance for closure. We will finally get to see how Bryan Fuller intended the second season to end. We can finally get a small piece of the show and its heart back.

I can already say that this product deserves five stars, on the fact that it’s amazing, and I have no doubt that this set will manage to hold on to the show’s greatness.

I can’t wait. :D

PUSHING DAISIES is no longer a part of the ABC schedule. [Update: There are now rumors that ABC is finally going to show the remaining DAISIES episodes in late May or early June. I have not heard whether the season finale will feature the original planned episode or the reedited one that will be included on the DVDs.]

Even though Amazon often makes it possible to review shows before the season has ended, I make it a personal policy to never write a review until the season has ended. I’m making an exception for Season Two of PUSHING DAISIES simply because we don’t know when or if ABC will air the final three episodes. There is talk that they might show the last three episodes in a single night, but possibly as late as sometime during the summer of 2009. Possibly not at all.

Time was when ABC was one of my favorite networks. Along with NBC, I watched more of their series than any other network. CBS has not had any shows that have interested me in a couple of decades and has become the network most opposed to Quality Television (a technical term for shows with specific qualities, none of which are possessed by CBS’s entire schedule). FOX has done some interesting shows, but such a huge percentage of them have been cancelled (though admittedly in the years before Kevin Reilly became head of programming — so far in his two years FOX has a much better track record and it might even become my new favorite network, especially if they keep DOLLHOUSE and TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, my two favorite FOX series, going past this spring). The CW apart from GOSSIP GIRL has yet to develop a single show that even remotely interests me, though the old WB series SMALLVILLE is a decent show that I’ve watched for years (and which is experiencing an unexpected resurgence in its 8th season, which will hopefully carry over with its now confirmed 9th season). But ABC is not a station I look to with much hope. I will admit that this could change if they eventually greenlight the series FABLES, based on Bill Willingham’s great comic series about fairy tale characters living in New York in a neighborhood called Fabletown (though ironically, the target audience for the show would probably be fans of PUSHING DAISIES). But even if FABLES turns out to be as great as it has the potential to be, I won’t easily forget the anger I am feeling over PUSHING DAISIES. Even as FOX has developed (and then not cancelled) several new interesting shows, I still an angered over FIREFLY, WONDERFALLS, DARK ANGEL, as well as several other series.

Canceling PUSHING DAISIES has almost overnight made me hate ABC more than I once did FOX. The ratings were not good and it was an expensive show to make, but it was one of the greatest glories in the history of television. It wasn’t a show with universal appeal. Some people of good taste felt the pace was too intense (the only show ever made on TV with more words per minute was probably THE GILMORE GIRLS). Some didn’t like the narrator (though Jim Dale’s narration for me was one of the glories of the show). Some objected to the persistent fantastical tone, though for me it was one of the greatest TV fantasies ever. I delighted in the neverceasing wordplay, the show’s love of the English language (the only two shows I know that evinced as much love of the language as PUSHING DAISIES were THE GILMORE GIRLS and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER). And we had a group of characters I came to care about more and more. Although I’m a serious student of television and have an almost embarrassing shows that I follow, PUSHING DAISIES was different. I thought of Mondays as being only two days before the next PUSHING DAISIES. And when Wednesday came around I had this thrill of anticipation, not unlike a small kid looking forward to a birthday party. Something new and special was able to enter the landscape of my imagination.

I’m not very worried about the future of the cast members. All of the performers have had success before and will again. Kristin Chenoweth has already landed one of the leads in a new David Kelly show dealing with (what else?) a law firm. Creator and executive producer Bryan Fuller has returned to HEROES, which NBC hopes he can breathe some life into the moribund and perhaps terminally ill series. Anna Friel has some movies in the can and will probably return to England where she’ll find a string of projects to work on. Lee Pace will be in demand and Chi McBride is never going to be out of work for very long. Eileen Greene and Swoozie Kurtz will both find new jobs, either on TV or on the stage. But the extraordinary alchemy that resulted from their collaboration is gone. I know that ultimately TV is a bottom line business. But when a show is this extraordinary, doesn’t any TV network have a moral responsibility to keep it alive.

It would be nice if perhaps the federal government could help by providing tax breaks to each network for keeping a couple of ratings-challenged shows alive simply because they are too good to let die. Surely it isn’t in the best interest of the American people or the human race to let a show like PUSHING DAISIES go away when it was producing television as good as we’ve ever seen in the history of the medium. DAISIES was not merely good TV; it was exemplary TV, stretching the possibilities of what you can do much as other series did like BUFFY, THE SOPRANOS, and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, or as MAD MEN is right now. The only thing that benefits by this show going away is the ABC bottom line. But how to measure the intense bitterness that they have created? For PUSHING DAISIES was not a show that its fans took casually. It was appointment television, viewing around which fans designed their evening.

Trying to look past my anger and my grief, I am profoundly grateful to Bryan Fuller and Barry Sonnenfeld (the latter was instrumental in not only directing several of the episodes, but creating the Shooting Bible that explained to other directors how to reproduce the unique PUSHING DAISIES look) for having created something so extraordinary. I’m delighted that we at least got 22 episodes that are among the most physically beautiful in the history of TV. While we did not get the conclusion of the stories, we did get a vivid introduction into their unique world. I’ve watched some episodes 7 or 8 times. I’m sure that I will watch both seasons again and again in the years to come.

Bryan Fuller has pledged to continue the series in one way or another. He has hopes of a made for TV movie to bring the story to a close. If he is unable to make a movie, he has apparently been in talks with DC Comics to continue PUSHING DAISIES as a comic series. (Ever since Joss Whedon continued BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER by continuing Season 8 in a new form, other TV creators have followed form. Rob Thomas has hopes of continuing VERONICA MARS at some point when he isn’t so busy creating multiple new shows. Rockne O’Bannon wrote a story for a new brief FARSCAPE comic series.) My hope is that by “DC” he really meant their highly distinguished imprint Vertigo, the most prestigious label in comics. I’m delighted that Bryan Fuller wants to keep faith with the show’s fans and show us where he wanted to stories to go.

And there is so much we want to know! Although some of this might be answered by the three unbroadcast episodes (which if ABC manages to get out of showing would certainly be contained in the DVD set), there are huge unanswered questions. First and foremost, will Chuck and Ned ever find a way to touch? Will Olive learn about Ned’s secret gift and how will she respond? Will Lily and Vivian learn that Chuck is alive again? Will Emerson locate his long lost daughter (the wonderful Gina Torres was cast as Emerson’s ex-wife, but I don’t know if her episodes were ever filmed)? What was the secret of the three watches? What will happen with Chuck’s dad? And what about Ned’s Dad? And precisely where did Ned get his remarkable gift and what is its larger significance? A made for TV movie would answer some of these. But I hope that in addition to the movie Fuller will indeed create a comic. I want answers.

But nothing is going to replace the huge loss the show creates. I am a huge collector of TV shows on DVD. I have a large and rich and very high quality collection. When I moved last August I arranged my TV DVD box sets on shelves, leaving room for future additions. Right between my box sets for THE PRISONER and SLINGS AND ARROWS I left a fair amount of empty space for what I was certain was going eventually be 4 or 5 or 6 seasons of PUSHING DAISIES. Now I’ll need only a fraction of the space.

I am always skeptical about new releases of movies that are available in the Public Domain but this edition of My Man Godfrey with Life With Father as a bonus is definately worth having…If you want the best version of this film, Criterion is great but the price tag is a bit high[....]bucks…If you are looking for a good version for a reasonable price, this is it…There are really cheap versions out there but they are really bad with choppy picture and bad sound…

ABOUT THE MOVIE:

“My Man Godfrey” (1936): Having seen quite a few “Screwball” comedies, they seem to have a couple common goals: to take the audience’s mind off the less-than-perfect world outside, and, aim rapid fire, relentless, snappy patter at your brain. You MUST pay attention, or you’re quickly left behind. Maybe there’s a third goal: somewhere in all the high speed exchanges you’ll find a morality tale…the perfect “entertainment” during the American Great Depression. Carole Lombard, Alice Brady, Eugene Palette, and others - all of whom take roles of flakey, pointless, self-centered RICH people - find themselves facing a “Forgotten Man” (jobless, homeless), played by William Powell. Not EVERY thing IS as it seems, but for the most part, this is a story made for the average person still dealing with the collapsed U.S. market. It’s funny, demanding, full of wonderful sets and costumes, and reminds us that there are more important things in life than having a full wallet.

My Man Godfrey could just be the greatest screwball comedy of all time as well as an amazing interpretation of just how blind the wealthy can be…

Godfrey is a lost man who is found by a rather spoiled upper east sider as part of a scavenger hunt. She takes him in and he becomes the family butler. Then, things start to go wrong with her father’s business and Godfrey steps in to help in an unexpected way. In the process, you find out who Godfrey REALLY is…

This edition comes with a great Xtra also, Life With Father, another comedy starring Willaim Powell alongside legendary actress Irene Dunne. In this one, a New York financier rules his numerous family in a calculated manor, when things start to go a bit nutty. A funny look at family life in the 1880’s, this movie is one of the best family films ever made and won several awards.

And it’s about time, too! This was definitely one of Disney’s better shows in the early/mid-90s. Both kids and adults can get a good laugh out of this show and the humor should hold up well over the years, nothing too dated.

I hear that there won’t be any extras in this set, but for the chance to finally get hold of this series, I’m more than willing to forgive that. Especially when there’s also supposed to be captioning, surround sound and decent artwork on the packaging. Disney also apparently learned their lesson with previous DVD series releases and this time they’re including the pilot. Only the first 25 eps of season 1, though, so hopefully the second half will be along soon.

The first 25 eps (and pilot) as follows:

There’s always hope that the next half of the season will have the extras this one is lacking, but even without that, it’s still more than worth the money to finally have Darkwing on DVD.

Recent conversation I had with a friend -

Me: It really was the best show ever. Sadly, I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch the rest of that DVD I got of the first season. I was so angry that they had put the edited version of the first episode on the DVD. I mean sheesh! I have the unedited version on the original video release. What were they thinking of? Don’t they think that people who buy the show do so because they actually want to see it as it was?

Friend: What the hell? Why do they edit all the shows on DVDs these days? … Way to promote illegal distribution by driving people to P2P networks for the original versions.

I love this show, I really do. I was on the list to be informed when it came out on DVD, and the minute Amazon e-mailed re: its availability I placed my order. I was so excited when it came. The minute it arrived I popped it in and watched the two-part pilot episode.

I haven’t touched it since. I was so disheartened at the cuts that had been made (the entire opening chase sequence and assorted gags and dialogue throughout), I didn’t have the heart to go back to it and be disappointed again.

I don’t know *why* the cuts were made. I doubt it was to tone down any cartoon violence as other equally “violent” moments were left in. I suspect these were edits that were made when the show was actually still on the air, edits made due to time considerations and for more commercial space. However, the full footage should have been restored and included when Disney decided to release the show on DVD.

I don’t want to be negative. I wouldn’t have reviewed except that, looking at what people have written, I see that no one has mentioned the edits. Younger viewers, people who didn’t see the show when it first came out or who didn’t watch it on video, many not even be aware. Still, fans should know that the show has been tampered with before they buy it.

5 stars for the original television show, but 3 stars for the DVD release.

I’ve seen this video countless times. More times, than any other movie. And every time I watch it, it moves me to tears. To experience a love so true and so deep is a miracle and to lose it… it’s beyond me. But to even experience it and see a glimpse of it (from this movie) is a wonder enough. The love story between rich Harvard hockey-player Oliver Barrett IV (played by Ryan O’Neal) and smart-mouthed Radcliffe gal Jennifer Cavilleri (played by Ali McGraw) is one of those once-in-a-lifetime love stories… captured on film. These two star-crossed lovers who are from the opposite ends of the socio-economic ladder overcome all obstacles (disapproving parents, near poverty and Harvard Law School) to make their love work. The only thing going for them was their love and devotion to each other. And just when things were finally looking up… tragedy strikes.

The book written by Eric Segal is even more moving but to see the movie, is just as a great experience. It’s not just a tearjerker! It’s truly a masterpiece! I LOVE THIS MOVIE! It’s my ALL TIME favorite movie.

Does anyone know if they plan to release this on DVD?

I have seen it countless times since if first came out in 1970 and was so thrilled to finally get my personal video of it this Christmas.

If you love a love story, this is the penultimate one. Oliver, the Harvard jock, and Jennifer, the poor and smart-mouthed music student from Rhode Island, touch the deepest parts of our hearts. Theirs is the love story that we all want—two people completely dedicated to each other. They survive class differences and parental disapproval because they love each other. How wonderful to see the heart-warming snowball scenes when their love is so obvious to viewers.

Of course, it is in the end, a tear-jerker that requires unlimited tissues. The couple that has it all can not overcome the one thing that is out of their hands.

You’ll laugh and cry and be touched for a lifetime. This is the greatest movie. Don’t miss it.

Again, Warner Bros. continues to rival other studios with their DVD releases of their classic movies. This time, they’ve pulled out all the stops for the 1941 version of The Maltese Falcon, the film that practically invented the film noir genre. Although not as packed with bonus materials like some of their other previous Special Edition, they’ve still put enough material on here to use THREE discs. The set contains a cardboard slipcase packaging two slim DVD cases. Disc 1 is contained in the first case, and the second case contains discs 2 and 3. I won’t go into detail on the movie, because I’m here to review the product itself, not the movie.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Maltese Falcon Three-Disc Special Edition! Click Here

The first disc contains the 1941 film noir classic, with a newly restored digital transfer. Digital artifacting is minimal if existent. Some film artifacting, such as occasional slight shakiness is present, but for the most part, the transfer is clean and free from flaws. The audio is presented in its glorious original mono mix, which has been cleaned up for this new transfer. An audio commentary is included, but I have yet to listen to it. Also included is a bonus called Warner Night At The Movies, which allows you to view a gallery of short subjects before The Maltese Falcon - the way you would have in 1941. The short subjects included are informative and/or entertaining and even include a couple of short cartoons. But the restored movie is, of course, the main attraction - and what an attraction!

Disc 2 contains a nice surprise - the first two film versions of The Maltese Falcon! The first one is the pre-code 1931 version starring Ricardo Cortez as Sam Spade and Bebe Daniels as Ruth Wonderly. Although this first version is very similar to the 1941 version, it contains a bit more sexual innuendo and suggestive scenes. For many years after its initial release, the film was not allowed to be shown until the late 60’s, when it turned up on TV under the title Dangerous Female. The second film is a thinly veiled screwball comedy take on the story titled Satan Met A Lady, starring Warren William as Ted Shane (Sam Spade) and Bette Davis as Valerie Purvis (Ruth Wonderly/Brigid O’Shaughnessy). Despite having all of the characters’ names changed and the object of desire changed to a ram’s horn filled with jewels, it’s obvious what the source material is. Satan Met A Lady’s theatrical trailer is included, but not the trailer for the 1931 film, despite the packaging’s claim that both versions’ trailers are included. Having all three films on this set is a good idea, in my opinion, because it allows the viewer to decide for themself what their favorite version is. Although in my opinion, the 1941 tops both of them, I highly enjoyed the other two films too. Unlike the 1941 version, these versions have not been restored and definitely show their age, with plenty of dirts, spots, and scratches. They’re unlikely to be revisited on DVD anytime soon, so this is about as good as they’re going to get treated on DVD.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Maltese Falcon Three-Disc Special Edition! Click Here

Disc 3 contains all of the 1941 version’s bonus materials. Not as packed as most supplemental material discs in Warner’s Special Editions, (In fact, a single-layer disc was used for disc 3, and holds approx. 3.5 GB of data.) the bonuses included are quite excellent and informative. Included is a new documentary on the making and impact of the movie, called One Magnificent Bird. Next is the TCM documentary Becoming Attractions: The Trailers of Humphrey Bogart, which includes theatrical trailers for many of Bogey’s classics, such as High Sierra, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, The Petrified Forest, and Treasure Of The Sierra Madre. The idea is to show Bogart’s progression from B-list bad guy to A-list movie star. Another great bonus is the Breakdowns of 1941 blooper reel, which contains some of the greatest old school actors and actresses, such as Bogart, Bette Davis, and James Cagney, blowing their lines - and often using some pretty salty language that couldn’t be shown in theaters at the time. Also included are some Mary Astor makeup tests, although I personally don’t see the significance. Finally, rounding out this set are three radio broadcast performances - the Lux Radio Theater performance with Edward G. Robinson, and two featuring Bogart, Mary Astor, and Sydney Greenstreet, with Peter Lorre also starring in one of the broadcasts. Approx. two hours of great old time radio to listen to.

This set may disappoint the consumer that has been spoiled by 4-Disc sets of Ben-Hur and Gone With The Wind and the 3-Disc set of The Wizard of Oz. Although I’m one of the consumers that has been spoiled with those releases, in my opinion, The Maltese Falcon’s 3-Disc Special Edition stands up alongside these releases beautifully. With THREE movies and around four hours of additional bonus materials, this set truly delivers. If you love old movies, Bogey, or film noir, this is a MUST-have for your collection.

Warner Brothers has one of the greatest film catalogs of any studio; yet they don’t appear to take their DVD issues very seriously. Who on earth would put “Goodfellas” on two sides of a disc? or not release the “Director’s Cut” version of “Eyes Wide Shut” (imagine the added revenue if they had)? or release a slapdash collection of Kubrick’s films? or almost never digitally enhance the audio or visual transfer or provide any significant extras? Compared to the deluxe packages that Universal, Criterion, and, even, Paramount has mustered, Warners’ issues - all released in cheap and easily breakable snap cases - are a peculiar desecration of a vaunted film legacy.

Case in point: “The Maltese Falcon”. Arguably the greatest detective film ever made, Warners at least releases it with a decent video transfer. Unfortunately, the audio synchronizing is off during the last 15 minutes of the movie (by a second but it’s still noticable) and I wasn’t able to access all the people on the “Cast and Crew” menu (no, it wasn’t a machine error, as I tested on several discs thereafter). Moreover, although I enjoyed the “Trailers of Humphrey Bogart” section, it would have been nice if Warners spent the money to create a documentary history of the film the way they did on Universal’s “Casablanca” release.

Much ink has been spilt praising “The Maltese Falcon” so I won’t go into any panegyrics here. It’s just a shame that Warners doesn’t take this market seriously enough to put more care into the DVD releases of their finest films.

Whats good about alot of these Christmas DVD’s that have come out in the last few years is that they present the specials in their original form. One hour TV specials from the sixties and seventies have gone through some edits over the years, most notably the Rankin Bass specials, such as Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, and this: Santa Claus is Comin To Town.

I watched this one on TV the other night with my kid. He really enjoyed it, as it is one of those timeless Christmas shows that every kid loves at Christmas.

But there was an entire musical number cut from the TV presentation. Perhaps you remember when Jessica (the sexy puppet, who eventually becomes Mrs. Claus) has to free Kris Kringle from jail. And in doing this, she is struck with intense liberation and sexual feelings for him, that cause her to let her hair down out of it’s bun for the first time ever (she was kind of a stuck up school teacher at the beggining, remember?) and dance around and sing in this psychedelic flower garden-fantasy sequence.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Santa Claus Is Comin to Town! Click Here

It is the most out of place scene in the movie, and I guess I can understand the network execs desicion in leaving it out (ABC is Disney owned these days) it’s probably considered either too controversial, or just too dated,… or the fact that it looks like most cartoon animators in the seventies were on tons of acid, I’m not sure. But at any rate, as somewhat of an obsessive when it comes to small details, I couldn’t get over the fact that the scene was just gone. This happens alot lately on TV. I watched Willy Wonka on TV with my kid one time and noticed that the entire psychedelic boat ride scene was chopped.

But thats what really makes the DVDs a good bet with these spcials. I’m a kid of the eighties. I have no real recollection of what the sixties/seventies were all about but I like the style. For you peeps out there that do remember, you should appreciate the uncut renditions of these specials found on DVD. It is the only way to ensure that your kids, and your kids kids, never forget just how flipping strange you people were in the seventies. Thank you. Much love and Merry Christmas. Now put that foot in front of the other and get this thing…

Once you get past the usual Christmas movie-viewing to-dos…Frosty…Grinch…Rudolph…Charlie Brown…you MUST check out this movie! Classic cast! Fred Astaire! Mickey Rooney! Keenan Wynn!

For years the name Burgermeister Meisterburger has rolled off my lips, and this year I finally bought the movie to show to my kids, which they loved.

Add this to your collection, you won’t regret it!

Co-creator and four-time Academy Award(R) nominee David Lynch, Kyle MacLachlan and Maedchen Amick take an amusing look back at the series in “A Slice of Lynch,” an all-new get-together of friends over piping hot coffee and sweet cherry pie.

“Return to Twin Peaks” follows a group of devoted fans to the 2006 Twin Peaks Festival, where the show’s faithful have been regularly gathering for costume contests, celebrity sightings, trivia games and other wildness in the woods outside of Seattle. And an Interactive Map allows viewers to revisit the show’s unforgettable locations as they appear today…and how to find them in real life.

Thought to have been lost forever, a selection of deleted scenes has been unearthed for this collection and approved by David Lynch, offering viewers additional clues and background on some of their favorite characters and locations in the series.

The collection showcases the phenomenon that was TWIN PEAKS with such archival nuggets as the “Saturday Night Live” opening monologue and “Twin Peaks” sketch featuring Kyle MacLachlan, the “Falling” music video featuring Julee Cruise, the Richard Beymer behind-the-scenes photo gallery, original network promo spots and many more rare gems!

Newly remastered from the original negative and personally approved by David Lynch, the episodes have never looked better. Moreover, viewers will have the option of enjoying the episodes in either new 5.1 Surround Sound or the original 2.0 network television audio.

So, um…there you go. Now grab a cup of coffee and a slice of cherry pie and order this baby!

It’s great to see that both seasons and the pilot are finally in one package. “Twin Peaks” was a fantastic show that was quite experimental for its time (1990-1991) that at it’s worst was better than most everything else on TV. I wish the show could have survived longer, but with an awful second season time slot - Saturday at 10pm - it had no chance. The revelation of Laura Palmer’s killer took the wind out of the sails somewhat just nine shows into the second season, but the true theme of Twin Peaks was about the evil in the woods that took the form of the killer and the seamy underbelly of what appeared to be everyday small-town life. The murder of Laura Palmer was just the surface of that. Three somewhat pointless episodes followed the one that revealed Laura’s killer, but then the show bounced back with the Windham Earle storyline. Unfortunately many viewers had stopped watching the show by then. Perhaps the lasting legacy of “Twin Peaks” is that it made series with weird subplots, long story arcs, and oddball characters more acceptable to the networks. For example, I don’t think that “The X-Files” could have made it to the air in 1993 had it not been for “Twin Peaks” preceding it and succeeding. After all, after a show where there is a dwarf that materializes on a bed, dances, and talks backwards, an alternate reality where clones are created and sent out to the world, and creamed corn as a symbol of suffering, the adventures of Scully and Mulder look as thematically tame as Dragnet.

A great Bardot set for both those who’ve seen her best known films and those looking for an introduction to one of the great sex symbols of all time. Films in this set are some lesser known ones but selected from all eras of her career to give a great overview.

NAUGHTY GIRL (1956)co-written by Bardot’s husband/svengali - Vadim just a year before her breakthrough hit “And God Created Woman”. Fun romp with Bardot in her early gamin look. Color/ widescreen

COME DANCE WITH ME (1959) - wild mix of genres from gangster film to musical to sex comedy. Plus you get to see Bardot dance which is a treat in and of itself. color

LOVE ON A PILLOW (1962) - co-written and directed by Vadim. Taken from biographical elements of Bardot’s life. A man tries to commit suicide and is helped in his recovery by Bardot. Co-starring Robert Hossein. Good early Vadim film. More dramatic role for Bardot like her roles in COntempt and The Truth. color/widescreen

TWO WEEKS IN SEPTEMBER (1967) - Swinging London in the late 60’s. Great print with wonderful colors. Cool shots of London, underground clubs and a very sexy Bardot in her more familiar blonde bomshell look. Color/widescreen

THE VIXEN (1969) - Bardot helps a writer get through his writer’s block as only she knows how to do. Toward the end of her career but Bardot still looks fantastic. And shows a more mature comedic talent. color

Several of these films were released in 2000 from Anchor Bay. But this set includes better prints and nice supplemental material. A good addition for the foreign cinephile’s library.

Being a lover of retro European cinema and a Bardot fan, for a couple of decades now, I was delighted that these much sought after collector additions of “Bardot” or ‘BB’ (as she was/is known to the French), films was now available from amazon. Speaking from a female point of view, to me Brigitte Bardot, was France’s own answer to Marilyn Monroe. Not that one should compare her in many respects (and she certainly would resist such comparisons), but the impact she had on contemporary cinema, culture, fashion, and sexuality (including the womens movement), is often under-estimated. Even when you look around today, at both American and European actresses and models, Bardot’s influence is ever more apparent. The full lips (though unlike Bardot, often cosmetically enhanced mind you), the bed hair, the adrogynously sensual body ,the pout and childishly carefree, earthy sexuality, that Bardot introduced into vogue, are still much evident in today’s style. Most young audiences wouldn’t realize that Bardot really was ahead of her time and set the trend for generations to come. A ‘petite bourgeois’ from a conservative Parisian family, who though launched onto the screen by first husband and director ‘Vadim’, somewhat innocently and quite unselfconsciously become a pioneer and symbol of the new female sexuality. A reaction (or perhaps continental offering)to post world war II and 1950’s American morality. Bardot was quite simply the original ’sex kitten’, a phrase perfectly suited to her unique playful, child/woman brand of sex appeal.

Yet underneath the tousled mane of bleached blond hair, provocative figure and pout, you could tell Bardot had a brain, a star quality and sensitive intelligence that often both carried and eclipsed, mediocre scripts, direction and male co-stars.

This quality dvd collection of subtitled (thank goodness, not dubbed), BB films, (all in colour for those interested) covers a varied selection of works: from the early very young, gamine, mid-fifties style Brigitte(Naughty Girl /’Cette Sacree Gamine’)and late 50’s Classic ‘blonde bombshell,pin-up’ Bardot(Come Dance With Me/Voulez Vouz Dancer Avec Moi?); to the early beatnik and then later swinging sixties style of (Love On A Pillow’/ Les Repos du Guerrier’ and ‘Two Weeks in September/’A Coeur Joie’). And finally, moving into the very early 70’s stage of her movie career, not long from retirement, with (The Vixen/ ‘Les Femmes’). It also features an extra, rather well narrated short documentary on ‘Bardot’, the Mythology of the Sex Symbol, with Hugh Heffner amongst those interviewed.

French cinema watchers and enthusiasts no doubt often found some of the English and ‘Hollywood’ re-naming of these films rather frivolous and silly. They often totally miss the point and don’t translate the meaning at all. But one must remember I suppose, at that time the object was to sell ‘The Bardot’ sexy image rather than the films themselves; their French ‘arty’ nature often being lost on American mainstream audiences. But for example, retitling ‘Le Repos du Guerrier’ which translates in English to ‘Warrior’s Rest’, or ‘Warrior Comes to Rest’ to ‘Love on a Pillow’, is rather ridicuously ‘fluffy’ and shallow, given the somewhat dark side to the films’ premise. That being: an abusive alcoholic’s, co-dependant and destructive relationship with a pretty, middle class young woman. When you think of how worlds apart American cinema was at that time to the more sophisticated earthy nature of the French, it’s only more testament to Bardot’s star power to sell these films abroard. She really did play a major part in putting French and foreign films in general, on the world map. And though hardly raising an eyebrow by today’s standards, they were very risque for their time, certainly as far as mainstream films go.

Out of this collection. I enjoyed “Les Femmes” (Where Bardot shows wit and flair for sardonic comedy and timing along with tremendous ‘chic’, though I found the flashbacks on the previous women/lovers, boring) and ” Voulez Vous Dancer Avec Moi?”;(Brigitte, I think at her most stunningly beautiful and charming - a great dancer too! and assisted by a strong supporting cast), the most. Both delightful light, romantic comedies, which I think always suited Bardot best.

Perhaps strictly for Bardot fans, none the less it gives you a glimpse into Bardot’s career as an actress and French super star/sex symbol. Though there are times when Bardot appears a little bored in her films, as if going through the motions, almost bemused at the larger than life image and legend created around her. She none the less is always a pleasure to watch. If not always a great actress, then certainly always an interesting and beautiful presence. It’s not surprising really that Bardot retired early to devote her life to caring for animals. No doubt she not only got fed up with it all, but was smart enough to realize it best to quit on top of her game. Leave before youthful beauty began to fade, and let her myth and icon perpetuate itself, as it has continued to do.

This review is not based on the movie itself or the quality of the Blu Ray disk. Rather it is a warning to those considering buying this multipack of the absolutely horrible packaging of this expensive set. My three pack arrived today and I just open the box and was horrified at the package. I have purchased many multi packs of movies/TV shows and every other time the disks were held on a separate page in a plastic reinforced page with a plastic spindle in the middle. This set came in a “book style “package with a foam rubber type spindle to hold the disk in place. Well on disk two “From Russia With love” the foam spindle was missing!! The disk had bounced around so much it was scratched and looked like an old scratched disk !!!! Regarding disks one and three the foam spindles were half torn off and surely after one play the foam spindle will certainly fall off. Disgraceful - A pox on MGM.

Let me first state that I was completely unaware of the problems with playing these movies until I browsed through the Amazon reviews. It is disturbing to constantly hear of people who paid good money for their expensive players not being able to fully enjoy movies that are expected to play on them. However, I have not experienced any problems playing a Bluray movie ever and this review is only discussing my personal experience with this specific package.

THE GOOD:

- Incredible video quality, better than what the audience saw on release date on some of the older movies.

Buy,Download, Or Stream James Bond Blu-ray Collection Three-Pack, Vol.2! Click Here

- Lots of extras, most of them worth watching or listening to.

- Beautiful packaging.

THE NOT SO GOOD:

- The sound restoration not as good as the video.

- Some of the ‘extras’ sections would benefit from a ‘play all’ option.

- The box could be a bit slimmer.

- May require upgrades on certain players.

_____________________________________________

The overall impression is of quality, inside and out. The box could be a little smaller but the packaging is exquisite. There’s a transparent plastic slide cover over a solid cardboard box holding a small binder on which the 3 individual movie disks are pages. Each movie comes on one disk, holding the movie itself and in incredible amount of extras.

The menu interface is well organized and there’s is even some humor in labeling. For example, the option that plays the movie is labeled ‘The Mission’ while the historic promotional material is found under ‘The Propaganda’. Depending on which section you may be, menu options branch into further sub-menus.

The extras are numerous and, for the most part interesting. The From Russia with Love disk, for example, has 3 fascinating interviews with Ian Fleming, including one where Fleming and Chandler discuss their work and their heroes, the Propaganda sections show contemporary trailers, even radio commercials.

The sound options include the original sound which, in the older releases is ‘mono’ but all movies have surround 5.1 as the default. The sound wasn’t upgraded and improved to the degree that the picture was but, it’s understandable. Going from mono to 5.1 surround would be the equivalent of upgrading from black and white to full-color 3-D in the world of images. The area where some of the older installments show their age is the sound.

When it comes to the pictures, the best that I can say is that you’ve got to see it to believe it. The restoration of the older movies started with the actual original negative, which is the one copy that’s almost never touched. Once the copy was digitized as a 4000 lines resolution digital copy (Bluray is 1080) every frame was reprocessed to eliminate any possible defects from ‘dirty optics’, such as the proverbial hair that we sometimes see on the older movies to scratches, bad exposure, color brilliance. The restorers’ goal for the end result, and this concerns the video only, not the sound quality, was to deliver what would appear to be a contemporary movie with a 60’s or 70’s theme rather than a 60’s or 70’s movies. In my view, they succeeded.

My overall rating is a solid five-stars. Just about everything in this release is superlative: the physical packaging, the interface design, the extras, the video quality. The sound is not so good on the older movies but, given the state of sound restoration technologies, I did not feel compelled to remove a star because the old movies sounded more or less like they did on release date.

Please note that and I am not factoring in player issues because, sooner or later, those are going to be addressed.
